Woman in blue sweater sits thoughtfully apart from a man on a gray couch in a calm living room; text asks, Losing desire in a relationship?

Losing desire in a relationship can be confusing and distressing. You may love your partner, care deeply about the relationship, and still find that your sexual desire has changed or disappeared. Perhaps intimacy has become less frequent, you rarely initiate sex, or you find yourself avoiding physical closeness altogether. For some couples, the difference in desire between partners can also become a source of tension, rejection, guilt, or resentment.

Changes in sexual desire are common, particularly in long-term relationships. However, when low desire begins to affect your emotional connection, self-esteem, or relationship satisfaction, it can be helpful to understand what may be happening beneath the surface.

Why Do We Lose Desire for Our Partner?

There is rarely one simple explanation for losing sexual desire. Desire is influenced by our emotional wellbeing, relationship dynamics, physical health, life circumstances, and previous experiences.

Stress, exhaustion, anxiety, unresolved conflict, resentment, parenting demands, changes in body image, medication, hormonal changes, and past trauma can all affect libido and intimacy. Sometimes, desire decreases when a relationship no longer feels emotionally safe or connected. At other times, sex itself can become associated with expectation, pressure, disappointment, or fear of rejecting a partner.

This can create a difficult cycle. One partner may seek more intimacy because they feel disconnected, while the other withdraws because they feel pressured. The more one person pursues, the more the other may pull away. Over time, both partners can feel unwanted, misunderstood, or alone.

Importantly, experiencing low desire does not automatically mean you have fallen out of love or that your relationship is failing.

Understanding Low Libido and Intimacy Issues

Therapy provides an opportunity to explore changes in desire without judgement or blame. Rather than focusing only on how often you have sex, we can look at the broader emotional and relational context in which intimacy occurs.

This may involve understanding patterns of closeness and distance, identifying unresolved hurt or resentment, exploring anxiety or trauma that affects intimacy, and developing more effective ways of communicating about sex, affection, boundaries, and emotional needs.

For some people, individual therapy provides the safest place to begin understanding their relationship with desire and intimacy. For others, relationship counselling or couples therapy can help both partners understand the cycle they have become caught in and begin creating a different experience together.

Rebuilding Intimacy and Connection

Reconnecting does not mean forcing yourself to feel desire or trying to return to exactly how your relationship was at the beginning. It can involve developing a deeper understanding of what helps you feel emotionally safe, connected, valued, and open to intimacy now.

With greater awareness and communication, couples can begin reducing pressure around sex, rebuilding emotional closeness, and creating space for affection, curiosity, pleasure, and desire to emerge differently.

If you are experiencing loss of desire, low libido, sexual disconnection, or intimacy issues in your relationship, working with a psychologist can help you understand what is contributing to the change and what you may need moving forward.

At SQ Psychology, I offer individual therapy and relationship counselling in Sydney to help people better understand themselves, their relationships, and the patterns affecting intimacy and connection.
